In the world of IT Operations, it seems as though every year is hyped up to be the year some new technology disruption will come along and soon all of our problems and issues will be solved. I bet you just can’t wait for that lights-out operations room you’ve always dreamed about… or until every IT process is available to be purchased as a commodity or utility from ‘the cloud’? Unfortunately, IT isn’t quite yet delivering on its promises and what we have today is complicated, expensive, resource intensive and something that perversely requires a great deal of people power.
We see customers seeking the most effective way to get the job done – the best way to employ IT services for the good of their respective businesses. They want the ability to manage these services with as little pain, cost, and effort as possible while being able to respond effectively to new business demands. They want Quality of Service at the best possible price with the flexibility to grow (and they must always assume their business is growing)
We see the move to implement best practices and to automate wherever possible. We see the need to better utilize current investments in infrastructure, and we have a desire to accurately predict and deploy resources against business demands. We do this with confidence in order to guarantee on time service delivery.
To achieve this, we need to do more than hire fully skilled and adaptable staff implement tools and best practices. We need to be open minded in driving tomorrow’s solutions to cope with tomorrow’s world. This requires the solution vendors to have a certain level of maturity, pragmatism and of course, the ability to deliver ‘relevant’ innovation.
A lot of this reform should be driven by “listening to the people in the front line of the IT Operations war room” (to quote Cameron Haight at Gartner) – a fair description the IT Operations environment, which can often be seen having a daily battle with the goals of time to delivery and quality of service competing against change and cost.
In this blog we aim explore this war room of IT Operations; we will consider the hype, the trends, the industry and the possible solutions. We will tell you what we think, you don’t have to agree, and we invite and encourage you to contribute and share war stories of your own!
